Calendula extract

Calendula extract suppliers and sourcing guide

Calendula extract is made from the flowers of pot marigold (Calendula officinalis), a garden plant grown widely in Europe and North America. The dried flowers are infused in a vegetable oil, extracted with water and glycerin or glycols, or extracted with supercritical CO2. Brands buy oil infusions and glycerin extracts for creams, balms and baby care, and CO2 extracts or dry extracts where a more concentrated material is needed.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Keep oil infusions in full, closed containers away from heat and light to slow rancidity, and keep water-glycerin extracts closed and within the supplier shelf life since they rely on a preservative. Shelf life is set by the supplier.

Lots and expiry dates

Color, odor and marker content vary with harvest and the flower-to-carrier ratio, so record the ratio and carrier for each lot. Check peroxide value on oil infusions at receipt and use older lots first.

Regulatory status

This is general information, not regulatory advice. Status differs by country and by how the ingredient is used, so check the rules for your product and market.
