Chromium chloride

Chromium chloride suppliers and sourcing guide

Chromium chloride for food and supplement use is chromium (III) chloride, usually the hexahydrate, made by dissolving chromium (III) oxide or hydroxide in hydrochloric acid and crystallizing. It forms dark green, hygroscopic crystals that dissolve in water and contain about 20% chromium. Because chromium is dosed in micrograms, brands buy it as a diluted trituration or inside a trace mineral premix.

Forms and grades of chromium chloride

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Hexahydrate crystals

The USP grade, used by premix and trituration makers.

  • Triturations

Chromium chloride diluted on a carrier to a stated chromium level.

  • Mineral premixes

Blends with other trace minerals at fixed ratios.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Assay
Chromium chloride content by titration or chromium by ICP-OES.
Hexavalent chromium
A limit test for chromium(VI), which should not be present.
Water content
Confirms the hexahydrate.
Iron and other metals
Limits on iron, lead and arsenic by ICP-MS.
Content uniformity
For triturations, assay of several samples from the lot.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Chromium chloride hexahydrate absorbs moisture readily, so keep it in tightly sealed containers in a dry place. Triturations should also be protected from humidity. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with assay and hexavalent chromium the usual retest checks.

Lots and expiry dates

Record the chromium assay, dilution strength and hexavalent chromium result for each lot, and double-check dosing math between the pure salt and triturations.

Regulatory status

Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.

This is general information, not regulatory advice. Status differs by country and by how the ingredient is used, so check the rules for your product and market.

Frequently asked questions

What forms of chromium chloride can brands buy?

Common forms include hexahydrate crystals, triturations and mineral premixes. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.

What should the COA for chromium chloride include?

Expect assay, hexavalent chromium, water content, iron and other metals and content uniformity, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.

How should chromium chloride be stored?

Chromium chloride hexahydrate absorbs moisture readily, so keep it in tightly sealed containers in a dry place. Triturations should also be protected from humidity. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with assay and hexavalent chromium the usual retest checks.

What is the regulatory status of chromium chloride?

Health Canada's Multi-Vitamin/Mineral Supplements monograph for natural health products lists chromium (III) chloride and its hexahydrate among the source ingredients for chromium (Table 2). 21 CFR 101.9(c)(8)(iv) sets the Reference Daily Intake for chromium at 35 mcg for adults and children 4 years and older.
