Cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine
Cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine suppliers and sourcing guide
Cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine is an amphoteric surfactant made by reacting coconut fatty acids with dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA) to form an amidoamine, then reacting that with sodium 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropanesulfonate. It is used like cocamidopropyl betaine as a secondary surfactant that builds foam and viscosity in shampoos and body washes, and stays stable at a wider pH range. Brands buy it as a roughly 40 to 50% aqueous solution.

Forms and grades of cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Standard grade (about 40 to 50% active)
Aqueous solution with sodium chloride by-product, in drums or totes.
Low-impurity grades
Grades with tight limits on free amidoamine and DMAPA.
Natural-standard grades
Coconut-derived grades approved for COSMOS or similar standards, preserved accordingly.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Active matter
- Percent active surfactant by two-phase (Epton) titration or by solids minus salt; it sets how much product a formula needs and is the main lot-to-lot number to record.
- Amidoamine and DMAPA
- Free amidoamine and residual DMAPA by HPLC or GC, recorded for each lot.
- Sodium chloride
- Salt content from the reaction, which affects viscosity.
- Residual chlorohydroxypropanesulfonate
- Unreacted alkylating agent and related by-products, against the supplier's limit.
- pH
- pH of the product as supplied or of a stated dilution (often 10%), which affects viscosity building, preservative choice and stability of the finished product.
- Microbiology and preservative
- Total aerobic count, yeast and mold and specified organisms, plus the identity and level of any preservative the supplier adds to the aqueous solution.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Store closed at 5 to 40 °C, away from freezing; cold material can haze and is mixed after warming. Keep containers sealed to protect the preservative system. Shelf life follows the supplier's specification, with a retest of active matter, pH and micro for older stock.
Lots and expiry dates
Record active matter, salt and amidoamine/DMAPA results for each lot and adjust salt additions for viscosity. Rotate FIFO.
Regulatory status
Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.
Health Canada's Natural Health Products Ingredients Database lists cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine (CAS 68139-30-0) with non-medicinal purposes including antistatic agent, cleansing surfactant and aqueous viscosity increasing agent, for topical use.
