Coco-glucoside

Coco-glucoside suppliers and sourcing guide

Coco-glucoside is a nonionic alkyl polyglucoside surfactant made by reacting glucose with fatty alcohols derived from coconut oil, giving a mix of chain lengths similar to coconut's fatty acid profile. It is used as a primary or co-surfactant in sulfate-free shampoos, body washes and facial cleansers, and in some liquid soaps. Brands buy it as a roughly 50% aqueous solution, often slightly cloudy and alkaline as supplied.

Forms and grades of coco-glucoside

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Standard solution (about 50% active)

Aqueous solution in drums or totes, typically alkaline and pH-adjusted in the finished formula.

  • COSMOS / Ecocert approved

Grades approved for natural and organic standards, from coconut-derived alcohols.

  • Blends with glyceryl oleate or other lipids

Trade-name blends that add a fatty component for feel; each has its own INCI list.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Active matter
Percent active surfactant by two-phase (Epton) titration or by solids minus salt; it sets how much product a formula needs and is the main lot-to-lot number to record.
Free fatty alcohol
Residual fatty alcohol by GC against the supplier's limit.
pH
pH of the solution or a 10% dilution.
Color and appearance
APHA or Gardner color and a visual check for clarity or haze; color tends to rise with age and heat.
Microbiology and preservative
Total aerobic count, yeast and mold and specified organisms, plus the identity and level of any preservative the supplier adds to the aqueous solution.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store closed at 5 to 40 °C, away from freezing; it can thicken, haze or separate when cold and is warmed and mixed before use. Shelf life follows the supplier's specification, with a retest of pH, color and micro for older stock.

Lots and expiry dates

Appearance and viscosity vary by lot and supplier, so record active matter, pH and color for each lot. Rotate FIFO and keep containers closed after opening.

Frequently asked questions

What forms of coco-glucoside can brands buy?

Common forms include standard solution (about 50% active), cOSMOS / Ecocert approved and blends with glyceryl oleate or other lipids. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.

What should the COA for coco-glucoside include?

Expect active matter, free fatty alcohol, pH, color and appearance and microbiology and preservative, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.

How should coco-glucoside be stored?

Store closed at 5 to 40 °C, away from freezing; it can thicken, haze or separate when cold and is warmed and mixed before use. Shelf life follows the supplier's specification, with a retest of pH, color and micro for older stock.

What is the regulatory status of coco-glucoside?

Health Canada's Natural Health Products Ingredients Database lists coco-glucoside as an approved ingredient with the non-medicinal purpose cleansing surfactant, for topical use only.
