Magnesium lactate

Magnesium lactate suppliers and sourcing guide

Magnesium lactate is the magnesium salt of lactic acid, made by neutralizing lactic acid, usually from fermentation of sugars, with magnesium oxide, hydroxide or carbonate and then crystallizing or spray-drying the product. The common form is the dihydrate, a white powder with about 10% magnesium and good water solubility. Brands buy it for beverages, effervescent tablets and capsules where a soluble, mild-tasting magnesium salt is wanted.

Forms and grades of magnesium lactate

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Dihydrate powder

The standard grade, with moderate magnesium content and good solubility.

  • Anhydrous

Dried grade with more magnesium per gram, specified where water content matters.

  • Granular grades

Agglomerated material for tableting and dust-free handling.

  • L(+) grades

Made from L(+)-lactic acid, with the isomer stated on the specification.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Assay
Magnesium lactate or magnesium content by EDTA titration on the dried basis.
Loss on drying
Confirms the hydrate and affects magnesium per gram.
Identity and pH
Tests for magnesium and lactate and the pH of a solution.
Lead and other metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold for beverage applications.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Keep magnesium lactate in sealed containers in a cool, dry place away from strong odors. It is stable when dry but can cake if left open in humid air. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with retest of assay and moisture on aged stock.

Lots and expiry dates

Record assay and loss on drying for each lot so magnesium per serving is calculated on the right basis. Check odor and solution clarity on new lots used in clear drinks.

Frequently asked questions

What forms of magnesium lactate can brands buy?

Common forms include dihydrate powder, anhydrous, granular grades and l(+) grades. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.

What should the COA for magnesium lactate include?

Expect assay, loss on drying, identity and pH, lead and other metals and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.

How should magnesium lactate be stored?

Keep magnesium lactate in sealed containers in a cool, dry place away from strong odors. It is stable when dry but can cake if left open in humid air. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with retest of assay and moisture on aged stock.

What is the regulatory status of magnesium lactate?

GRN 570, for magnesium lactate notified by Exponent as a source of dietary magnesium in fruit flavored beverages, closed on January 26, 2016 when FDA ceased to evaluate it at the notifier's request. Health Canada's Multi-Vitamin/Mineral Supplements monograph for natural health products lists magnesium lactate among the source ingredients for magnesium (Table 2).
