Oat beta-glucan
Oat beta-glucan suppliers and sourcing guide
Oat beta-glucan is the soluble, mixed-linkage glucose polymer found in the cell walls of oat kernels, concentrated in the bran. Concentrates are made by milling and sieving oat bran, or by extracting the bran with water or mild alkali, then precipitating, concentrating and drying the glucan. Buyers choose by beta-glucan percentage, which ranges from enriched bran near 20% to purified extracts of 70% or more, and by molecular weight, which sets viscosity.

Forms and grades of oat beta-glucan
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Oat bran concentrate
Air-classified or sieved oat bran with roughly 14 to 28% beta-glucan; contains protein, fat and starch along with the fiber.
Purified oat beta-glucan extract
Water- or alkali-extracted and dried, typically 70% or more beta-glucan, low in starch and protein; used in drinks and capsules.
High vs. low molecular weight grades
High-molecular-weight grades give thick solutions; enzyme-reduced grades stay thin in beverages at the same dose.
Gluten-free oat grades
Made from oats grown and handled to keep wheat, barley and rye out; supplied with gluten test results.
Organic
From certified organic oats, sold under organic certification.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Beta-glucan content
- Mixed-linkage beta-glucan by the enzymatic McCleary method (AOAC 995.16), reported on a dry basis.
- Molecular weight or viscosity
- Average molecular weight by size-exclusion chromatography, or solution viscosity, to confirm the grade.
- Moisture, protein, fat and ash
- Proximate analysis that shows how much of the powder is not fiber.
- Gluten
- Gluten by ELISA for gluten-free claims, since oats are often contaminated with wheat or barley in the field and mill.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, coliforms or Enterobacteriaceae, E. coli and Salmonella.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Keep oat beta-glucan in sealed, lined bags or drums in a cool, dry place away from strong odors. Bran concentrates contain oat fat that can turn rancid with heat and air, so they have shorter shelf lives than purified extracts. Suppliers set a best-before or retest date for unopened packaging.
Lots and expiry dates
Beta-glucan percentage and molecular weight vary with oat variety, crop year and process, so check both on every COA if you dose by beta-glucan grams. Record the gluten result and the oat origin for each lot. Rotate bran concentrates first-expiring-first because of the fat content.

What forms of oat beta-glucan can brands buy?
Common forms include oat bran concentrate, purified oat beta-glucan extract, high vs. low molecular weight grades, gluten-free oat grades and organic. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for oat beta-glucan include?
Expect beta-glucan content, molecular weight or viscosity, moisture, protein, fat and ash, gluten, heavy metals and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should oat beta-glucan be stored?
Keep oat beta-glucan in sealed, lined bags or drums in a cool, dry place away from strong odors. Bran concentrates contain oat fat that can turn rancid with heat and air, so they have shorter shelf lives than purified extracts. Suppliers set a best-before or retest date for unopened packaging.
