Sodium molybdate
Sodium molybdate suppliers and sourcing guide
Sodium molybdate is the sodium salt of molybdic acid, made by dissolving molybdenum trioxide in sodium hydroxide and crystallizing the dihydrate. It is a white crystalline powder that dissolves readily in water and contains about 40% molybdenum. Because molybdenum is dosed in micrograms, brands usually buy it as a diluted trituration or inside a trace mineral premix.

Forms and grades of sodium molybdate
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Dihydrate crystals or powder
The standard USP or reagent-derived food grade.
Anhydrous
Dried grades with more molybdenum per gram.
Triturations
Sodium molybdate diluted on a carrier to a stated molybdenum level for even dosing.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Assay
- Sodium molybdate content by titration or molybdenum by ICP-OES.
- Loss on drying
- Confirms the dihydrate and checks for excess moisture.
- Lead, arsenic and other metals
- Metals by ICP-MS against compendial or supplier limits.
- Content uniformity
- For triturations, assay of several samples from the lot.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Store sodium molybdate in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry place away from moisture and reducing agents. It is stable under normal conditions. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with assay the usual retest check.
Lots and expiry dates
Record the molybdenum assay and, for triturations, the dilution strength for each lot. Check dosing math carefully, because the target amount is in micrograms.
Regulatory status
Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.
Health Canada's Multi-Vitamin/Mineral Supplements monograph for natural health products lists sodium molybdate (VI) and its dihydrate among the source ingredients for molybdenum (Table 2).

What forms of sodium molybdate can brands buy?
Common forms include dihydrate crystals or powder, anhydrous and triturations. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for sodium molybdate include?
Expect assay, loss on drying, lead, arsenic and other metals and content uniformity, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should sodium molybdate be stored?
Store sodium molybdate in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry place away from moisture and reducing agents. It is stable under normal conditions. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with assay the usual retest check.
What is the regulatory status of sodium molybdate?
