Vanadyl sulfate

Vanadyl sulfate suppliers and sourcing guide

Vanadyl sulfate is the sulfate salt of the vanadyl (VO) ion, with vanadium in the +4 state. It is made by reducing vanadium pentoxide in sulfuric acid and crystallizing a blue hydrated salt. It dissolves in water, and because vanadium is used in very small amounts, brands buy it as a diluted trituration or in a mineral premix with the vanadium content stated.

Forms and grades of vanadyl sulfate

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Hydrated crystals or powder

The blue salt, with the hydrate and vanadium content stated on the specification.

  • Triturations

Diluted on a carrier to a stated vanadium level for even dosing.

  • Mineral premixes

Blends with other trace minerals at fixed ratios.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Vanadium assay
Vanadium by ICP-OES or redox titration.
Water content
Loss on drying or ignition to confirm the hydrate.
Iron and other metals
Limits on iron, lead, arsenic and cadmium by ICP-MS.
Content uniformity
For triturations, assay of several samples from the lot.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store vanadyl sulfate in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry place; it absorbs moisture and slowly oxidizes in moist air. Triturations need the same protection. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with vanadium assay the usual retest check.

Lots and expiry dates

Record the hydrate form, vanadium assay and dilution strength for each lot, and double-check dosing math between pure and diluted grades.

Regulatory status

Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.

This is general information, not regulatory advice. Status differs by country and by how the ingredient is used, so check the rules for your product and market.

Frequently asked questions

What forms of vanadyl sulfate can brands buy?

Common forms include hydrated crystals or powder, triturations and mineral premixes. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.

What should the COA for vanadyl sulfate include?

Expect vanadium assay, water content, iron and other metals and content uniformity, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.

How should vanadyl sulfate be stored?

Store vanadyl sulfate in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry place; it absorbs moisture and slowly oxidizes in moist air. Triturations need the same protection. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with vanadium assay the usual retest check.

What is the regulatory status of vanadyl sulfate?

Health Canada's Multi-Vitamin/Mineral Supplements monograph for natural health products lists vanadyl sulfate and its dihydrate among the source ingredients for vanadium (Table 4). The same monograph classes vanadium as a complementary ingredient that must be combined with at least one medicinal ingredient from its Tables 1 to 3.
