Larch arabinogalactan
Larch arabinogalactan suppliers and sourcing guide
Larch arabinogalactan is a water-soluble, highly branched polysaccharide made of galactose and arabinose units, extracted from the wood of larch trees. Wood chips of western larch (Larix occidentalis) or eastern larch (Larix laricina) are extracted with water, and the extract is filtered, purified, concentrated and spray-dried. Buyers get a fine, off-white to light tan powder with little taste that dissolves readily and gives solutions of low viscosity.

Forms and grades of larch arabinogalactan
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Spray-dried powder
The standard form; fine powder that dissolves quickly in water and mixes into dry blends.
Agglomerated (instantized) powder
Granulated grade that disperses with less clumping and dust in drink mixes.
Organic
Made from larch wood under organic certification, offered by some producers.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Arabinogalactan content
- Polysaccharide content by HPLC or size-exclusion chromatography, or calculated by difference, on a dry basis.
- Sugar composition
- Galactose and arabinose ratio by HPLC or GC after acid hydrolysis, which confirms identity.
- Moisture and ash
- Loss on drying and residue on ignition; the powder is hygroscopic.
- Solution color and clarity
- Color of a standard solution, which shows how well wood extractives were removed.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, coliforms or Enterobacteriaceae, E. coli and Salmonella.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Arabinogalactan powder takes up moisture and can cake, so keep it in sealed, moisture-barrier bags or lined drums in a cool, dry place. Re-seal opened containers promptly. Shelf life is set by the supplier's best-before or retest date for unopened packaging.
Lots and expiry dates
Color, moisture and polysaccharide content can vary by lot, so compare them on each COA. Record the larch species and the producer, since the GRAS notices are specific to their notifiers' products.
