Sunflower seeds
Sunflower seeds suppliers and sourcing guide
Sunflower seeds are the achenes of the sunflower plant (Helianthus annuus). Confectionery (non-oil) types have larger, often striped seeds and are sold in-shell or dehulled as kernels, raw or roasted; oilseed types are smaller and black and are mostly crushed for oil. Brands buy kernels in several sizes for bars, breads, trail mixes, seed butters and toppings, and roasted in-shell seeds for snacks.

What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Moisture
- Oven moisture; higher moisture invites mold and rancidity.
- Rancidity
- Free fatty acids and peroxide value, since kernels are high in polyunsaturated oil.
- Defects and foreign material
- Hulls, stones, insect damage and discolored kernels against the supplier's grade.
- Cadmium and heavy metals
- Cadmium and lead by ICP-MS; sunflower kernels can take up cadmium from soil.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, coliforms, E. coli and Salmonella; ask whether the lot was pasteurized or roasted and how that step was validated.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Store kernels sealed in a cool, dry place away from light and strong odors; refrigerated storage slows rancidity, especially for raw kernels kept for months. Protect stock from insects and rodents. Shelf life is set by the supplier's specification, with free fatty acids or flavor checked on older lots.
Lots and expiry dates
Kernel size, color and oil quality vary with variety and crop year. Record origin, crop year, free fatty acids and peroxide value for each lot and rotate stock first-in, first-out.
Regulatory status
Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.
USDA's official grain standards (7 CFR 810.1801) define sunflower seed as grain that consists of 50.0 percent or more of cultivated sunflower seed (Helianthus annuus L.) before removal of foreign material.
