Crospovidone
Crospovidone suppliers and sourcing guide
Crospovidone is a cross-linked, water-insoluble form of polyvinylpyrrolidone made by polymerizing N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone under conditions that build a cross-linked network. It swells quickly in water without dissolving or forming a gel. Tablet makers buy it as a fast-acting disintegrant and binder, and beverage makers use food grades (often called PVPP) to remove polyphenols from beer, wine and juice before filtering it out.

Forms and grades of crospovidone
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Type A and Type B
Pharmacopeial monographs distinguish two types that differ mainly in particle size; coarser grades break tablets apart faster and finer grades give smoother surfaces.
Fine and micronized grades
Small-particle grades for small tablets, orally dispersible tablets and suspensions.
Beverage-grade PVPP
Grades for clarifying beer, wine, juice and vinegar, offered for single use or for regeneration and reuse.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Identity
- IR spectrum compared with a reference standard.
- Nitrogen content (assay)
- Nitrogen by Kjeldahl or combustion, reported on a dry basis against the monograph range.
- Water-soluble substances
- The fraction that dissolves in water, which limits soluble povidone and low-molecular-weight material.
- Monomer and peroxides
- Residual N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone by HPLC and peroxides by titration or colorimetry.
- Loss on drying
- Moisture; crospovidone is hygroscopic and picks up water once opened.
- Particle size
- Laser diffraction or sieve analysis, which affects disintegration time and tablet appearance.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Keep tightly closed in a dry place, because the powder absorbs moisture from air and then performs less consistently. Shelf life or retest date is set by the supplier; reseal opened containers promptly and retest moisture on older stock.
Lots and expiry dates
Particle size and moisture vary by lot and change disintegration time and flow. Record type (A or B), particle size and peroxide value per lot, especially for formulas with oxidation-sensitive actives.

What forms of crospovidone can brands buy?
Common forms include type A and Type B, fine and micronized grades and beverage-grade PVPP. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for crospovidone include?
Expect identity, nitrogen content (assay), water-soluble substances, monomer and peroxides, loss on drying and particle size, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should crospovidone be stored?
Keep tightly closed in a dry place, because the powder absorbs moisture from air and then performs less consistently. Shelf life or retest date is set by the supplier; reseal opened containers promptly and retest moisture on older stock.
