Gamma-cyclodextrin
Gamma-cyclodextrin suppliers and sourcing guide
Gamma-cyclodextrin is a ring of eight glucose units made from starch with a cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase enzyme, then purified, crystallized and dried. Its cavity is larger than those of alpha- and beta-cyclodextrin, and it is far more soluble in water than beta-cyclodextrin. It is sold as a white crystalline powder and used to form inclusion complexes with flavors, oils, fat-soluble vitamins and other compounds so they are easier to handle, disperse in water or keep stable.

Forms and grades of gamma-cyclodextrin
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Food grade
Crystalline powder for use as a carrier, stabilizer and formulation aid in foods.
Pharmaceutical grade
Grades meeting the Ph. Eur. or USP/NF monograph for excipient use.
Pre-formed complexes
Ready-made complexes of gamma-cyclodextrin with ingredients such as coenzyme Q10, curcumin or flavors, sold as powders with a stated active content.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Identity
- HPLC retention time or IR compared with a reference standard.
- Assay and related cyclodextrins
- Gamma-cyclodextrin by HPLC, with alpha- and beta-cyclodextrin and other related substances reported.
- Water
- Water by Karl Fischer or loss on drying against the grade limit.
- Reducing sugars and residual solvents
- Reducing sugars by a colorimetric or titration method, and residual solvents or complexing agents by GC where the process uses them.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS against the supplier specification or the buyer's own limits.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, coliforms or E. coli, and Salmonella, which matter most when the ingredient goes uncooked into powders, capsules or tablets.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Store in closed containers in a cool, dry place away from strong odors. It is stable when dry; shelf life or retest date is set by the supplier, and older stock is retested for water and assay.
Lots and expiry dates
Water content varies by lot and changes the dry-basis amount in each kilogram. For pre-formed complexes, record the stated active content per lot, since it sets the dose in finished products.

What forms of gamma-cyclodextrin can brands buy?
Common forms include food grade, pharmaceutical grade and pre-formed complexes. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for gamma-cyclodextrin include?
Expect identity, assay and related cyclodextrins, water, reducing sugars and residual solvents, heavy metals and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should gamma-cyclodextrin be stored?
Store in closed containers in a cool, dry place away from strong odors. It is stable when dry; shelf life or retest date is set by the supplier, and older stock is retested for water and assay.
