Hemp seed oil

Hemp seed oil suppliers and sourcing guide

Hemp seed oil is pressed from the seeds of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa). Unrefined cold-pressed oil is green from chlorophyll and has a nutty flavor; refined oil is pale and neutral. It is distinct from CBD or hemp extracts, which come from flowers and leaves. Brands buy it for bottled oils, softgels, foods and cosmetics, and it must be tested for THC.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

THC and cannabinoids
Delta-9-THC, THCA and other cannabinoids by HPLC or LC-MS/MS, reported against legal limits in the markets you sell to.
Fatty acid profile
Linoleic, alpha-linolenic and gamma-linolenic acids by GC as methyl esters.
Free fatty acids and peroxide value
Free fatty acids (as oleic acid) by titration (AOCS Ca 5a-40) and peroxide value (AOCS Cd 8b-90); both rise as the oil ages or is handled poorly.
Pesticide residues
Multi-residue screen by GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS.
Heavy metals
Lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury by ICP-MS, reported against the supplier specification.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store sealed, refrigerated or cool, and protected from light; unrefined oil oxidizes fairly quickly. Shelf life is set by the supplier specification, with peroxide value retested on aged stock.

Lots and expiry dates

Record the THC result and cultivar or seed origin for each lot, since THC traces vary with seed cleaning. Color and flavor of unrefined oil also vary by crop.

Regulatory status

This is general information, not regulatory advice. Status differs by country and by how the ingredient is used, so check the rules for your product and market.
