Pouches and flexible packaging
Pouches and flexible packaging for powders, snacks and refills
Stand-up and flat pouches, sachets and roll stock, stock or printed to your artwork. What to require, what to ask, and US suppliers whose own websites back every claim we list.
What to require from pouch and flexible packaging suppliers
Barrier matched to your product
Powders, coffee and snacks go stale or clump when oxygen and moisture get in. Ask for the oxygen and moisture transmission rates of the film structure, and run a shelf-life test in the real pouch.
Food-contact compliance
The inner layer touches your product. Get a statement that the structure meets FDA food-contact rules for your product type and fill temperature.
Fits your filling line
Pre-made pouches and roll stock run on different machines. For roll stock, your co-manufacturer gives the web width, core size, unwind direction and seal temperature. Get those before you order.
Room for lot and expiry codes
Leave a clear, unvarnished panel where your co-manufacturer can print the lot number and expiry date, and confirm their coder works on that film.
The right print method for your volume
Digital printing has low minimums and no plates, so it suits many SKUs and small runs. Plate printing (flexo or gravure) costs more to set up and less per unit at volume.
Honest recyclability claims
Most multi-layer pouches are not recyclable curbside. If you claim recyclable or compostable, get the certification or test data from the supplier and follow the FTC Green Guides.
Questions to ask before you order
- What film structure do you recommend for my product, and what are its barrier specs?
- Can you send a food-contact compliance statement for that structure?
- Pre-made pouches or roll stock: which does my co-manufacturer’s machine run?
- Is this printed digitally or with plates, and what are the plate costs and minimums?
- How many SKUs or versions can I combine into one order?
- Where can my co-manufacturer print lot and expiry codes?
- Is each roll or carton marked with a lot number?
- What is the lead time from approved proof to delivery?

What is the lowest minimum for custom printed pouches?
Digitally printed pouches can start in the hundreds or low thousands, and some suppliers combine several designs in one order. Plate-printed runs usually start much higher. We list a minimum only when the supplier states it on its own site.
Pre-made pouches or roll stock?
Hand-filled and small runs use pre-made pouches. Form-fill-seal machines, including stick-pack and sachet lines, use roll stock and make the pouch as they fill. Your co-manufacturer’s equipment decides it.
Are compostable pouches as good a barrier?
Usually not yet. Many compostable films let in more oxygen and moisture than foil or metallized structures. Test your product’s shelf life in the actual pouch before switching.
