Shipper and mailer boxes

Mailer and shipping boxes that get orders there intact

Printed mailer boxes, plain corrugated shippers and mailers. What to require, what to ask, and US suppliers whose own websites back every claim we list.

What to require from shipper and mailer box suppliers

Strength for how it ships

Corrugated is rated by edge crush (ECT) or burst strength. Ask which rating the box has and test-ship real orders, especially glass, liquids and heavy bundles.

Inside dimensions that fit the order

Carriers bill by size as well as weight, so empty space costs money on every order. Size the box to your most common order, and ask about inserts instead of loose fill.

Works with your 3PL

Your 3PL packs the box. Ask them which sizes they stock, whether they can store your printed boxes, and how they want them delivered.

Storage and delivery

Boxes ship flat but still take pallet space. Ask how many come per bundle and per pallet, and whether the supplier can hold stock and release it as you need it.

Heat protection where it matters

Gummies, chocolate, softgels and some cosmetics soften in summer heat. Ask about insulated liners or shippers if you ship through hot months.

Honest recycling claims

Corrugated is widely recycled; poly and padded mailers often are not. Print recycling or compostable claims only when the supplier can back them, and follow the FTC Green Guides.

Questions to ask before you order

  1. What is the edge crush or burst rating of this box, and the flute size?
  2. What are the inside dimensions, and can you make a size between your stock ones?
  3. Is printing inside, outside or both, and how does that change the minimum?
  4. How many boxes come per bundle and per pallet?
  5. Can you hold stock and ship it in releases to my 3PL?
  6. What recycled content does the box have, and can you document it?
  7. What is the lead time for a reorder of the same printed box?

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a mailer box and a shipper?

A mailer box is a one-piece folding corrugated box with a tuck-in lid, often printed, and opens like a gift. A regular slotted shipper is the plain four-flap box sealed with tape. Mailers cost more and look better; shippers are cheaper and come in more sizes.

What does ECT mean on a box?

Edge crush test: how much force the board takes on its edge before it crushes, which predicts how well boxes stack. A 32 ECT box is common for e-commerce orders. Heavier or fragile orders may need more.

How do I find custom printed boxes with low minimums?

Several suppliers print mailer boxes digitally with minimums in the tens or hundreds, at a higher cost per box than large runs. We show a minimum only when the supplier states it on its own site.
