Alpha-GPC

Alpha-GPC suppliers and sourcing guide

Alpha-GPC (L-alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine, choline alfoscerate) is a water-soluble choline compound made of glycerol, phosphate and choline. Commercial material is made either by removing the fatty acids from soy or sunflower lecithin phosphatidylcholine, or by chemical synthesis, then purified. It is very hygroscopic, so it is sold as a 50% powder on a silica or other carrier, or as a concentrated liquid of about 85% or more.

Forms and grades of alpha-gpc

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Alpha-GPC 50% powder

Alpha-GPC on a carrier such as silicon dioxide, the usual form for capsules and tablets.

  • Alpha-GPC liquid (about 85% to 99%)

Concentrated aqueous solution for liquids, softgels and further processing.

  • Lecithin-derived

Made from soy or sunflower phosphatidylcholine; may need source and allergen documentation.

  • Synthetic

Made by chemical synthesis; specify residual solvent and impurity limits.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Assay (HPLC)
Alpha-GPC content by HPLC, reported on the stated basis (as-is or anhydrous) for the powder or liquid.
Identity
IR or NMR and HPLC retention time against a reference standard; specific rotation for the L-form.
Water content
Karl Fischer for liquids and powders; the compound takes up water readily.
Residual solvents
Solvents from synthesis or purification, against USP <467> or the buyer's limits.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, checked against the supplier specification and the buyer's own limits.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, coliforms or E. coli, and Salmonella, against the supplier specification.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Alpha-GPC is strongly hygroscopic: keep powder in sealed, moisture-barrier packaging with desiccant in a cool, dry room, and close opened containers right away. Liquid grades should be kept sealed at controlled room temperature. Shelf life and retest come from the supplier's specification.

Lots and expiry dates

Assay can read low if a powder has taken up water, so record water content and assay together for each lot. Note the carrier, the source (lecithin-derived or synthetic) and the percentage grade, and rotate first-expiry-first-out.

Regulatory status

Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.

This is general information, not regulatory advice. Status differs by country and by how the ingredient is used, so check the rules for your product and market.

Alpha-GPC suppliers

Manufacturers and distributors whose own websites say they sell it.

  • Chemi Nutra

    Manufacturer · Austin, TX

    Sells it as AlphaSize

US arm of Italian drug maker Italfarmaco that sells branded alpha-GPC and phosphatidylserine to supplement, food and beverage brands, shipping from a warehouse in Austin, Texas.

Suppliers are in alphabetical order and none pays to appear. Each claim is checked against the supplier’s own website on the date shown. Ask for the specification sheet and a recent COA before you order, and confirm details with the supplier.

Frequently asked questions

What forms of alpha-gpc can brands buy?

Common forms include alpha-GPC 50% powder, alpha-GPC liquid (about 85% to 99%), lecithin-derived and synthetic. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.

What should the COA for alpha-gpc include?

Expect assay (HPLC), identity, water content, residual solvents, heavy metals and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.

How should alpha-gpc be stored?

Alpha-GPC is strongly hygroscopic: keep powder in sealed, moisture-barrier packaging with desiccant in a cool, dry room, and close opened containers right away. Liquid grades should be kept sealed at controlled room temperature. Shelf life and retest come from the supplier's specification.

What is the regulatory status of alpha-gpc?

GRN 419, for L-alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine notified by ChemiNutra, Inc. as a source of choline in listed beverages and foods, closed on November 20, 2012 with FDA having no questions. The EU Novel Food Catalogue entry POL-NF-00440 records the Czech competent authority's conclusion that L-alpha-GPC is a novel food, with the status not yet authorised. A Health Canada multi-ingredient natural health product monograph lists L-alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine (choline alfoscerate) as a medicinal ingredient.
