Apigenin
Apigenin suppliers and sourcing guide
Apigenin is a flavone (4',5,7-trihydroxyflavone), a pale yellow compound found in chamomile flowers, parsley, celery and artichoke, often bound to sugars as glycosides. It is supplied either as plant extracts standardized to apigenin, mainly from chamomile, or as high-purity apigenin made by purifying plant material or by synthesis. Purified apigenin dissolves poorly in water, so brands buy it as a fine powder for capsules or in dispersible forms.

Forms and grades of apigenin
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Apigenin 98%
High-purity apigenin powder, plant-derived or synthetic, for capsules and tablets.
Chamomile extract standardized to apigenin
Matricaria chamomilla flower extract with a declared apigenin percentage, usually low, with other chamomile compounds present.
Celery seed and parsley extracts
Other botanical extracts that carry apigenin, sold on their own specifications.
Dispersible forms
Apigenin with carriers to make it disperse in liquids, at a lower apigenin percentage.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Assay (HPLC)
- Apigenin content by HPLC, stated as free apigenin; for extracts, ask whether glycosides are hydrolyzed and counted.
- Identity
- HPLC retention time and UV spectrum, or HPTLC fingerprint for botanical extracts.
- Residual solvents
- Solvents from extraction or synthesis against USP <467> or the buyer's limits.
- Heavy metals and pesticides
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, and a pesticide screen for plant-derived material.
- Microbiology and loss on drying
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, and pathogens, plus moisture.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Keep apigenin sealed in light-resistant containers in a cool, dry place. Botanical extracts are more hygroscopic than purified apigenin and should be resealed promptly. Shelf life and retest dates come from the supplier's specification.
Lots and expiry dates
Record the apigenin assay and source (plant species or synthetic) for each lot. Chamomile extract lots vary in apigenin content with harvest, so check the actual figure rather than the nominal grade.
Regulatory status
Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.
Health Canada's Natural Health Products Ingredients Database classifies apigenin as a natural health product under Schedule 1, item 2 (an isolate), with source materials including Apium graveolens seed and Matricaria chamomilla flower.

What forms of apigenin can brands buy?
Common forms include apigenin 98%, chamomile extract standardized to apigenin, celery seed and parsley extracts and dispersible forms. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for apigenin include?
Expect assay (HPLC), identity, residual solvents, heavy metals and pesticides and microbiology and loss on drying, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should apigenin be stored?
Keep apigenin sealed in light-resistant containers in a cool, dry place. Botanical extracts are more hygroscopic than purified apigenin and should be resealed promptly. Shelf life and retest dates come from the supplier's specification.
