Avocado oil

Avocado oil suppliers and sourcing guide

Avocado oil is extracted from the flesh (mesocarp) of the avocado fruit (Persea americana), unlike most plant oils, which come from seeds. Virgin oil is made by malaxing the pulp and separating the oil by centrifuge, giving a green oil; refined oil is bleached and deodorized to a pale, neutral oil. Brands buy it for cooking oils, sprays, foods and cosmetics.

Mechanically extracted, unrefined green oil with avocado flavor.

  • Refined

Refined, bleached and deodorized oil with neutral color and flavor.

  • Organic

    Oil from certified organic fruit.

  • Cosmetic grade

Refined oil supplied to cosmetic specifications, sometimes with the INCI name Persea gratissima oil.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Fatty acid profile
Oleic, palmitic and linoleic acids by GC as methyl esters.
Authenticity markers
Sterol profile and other markers to screen for blending with cheaper oils, a known problem in this category.
Free fatty acids and peroxide value
Free fatty acids (as oleic acid) by titration (AOCS Ca 5a-40) and peroxide value (AOCS Cd 8b-90); both rise as the oil ages or is handled poorly.
Color and chlorophyll
Color and chlorophyll content, which separate virgin and refined grades.
Heavy metals
Lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury by ICP-MS, reported against the supplier specification.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store sealed, protected from light and heat; virgin oil is more sensitive to light because of its chlorophyll. Shelf life follows the supplier specification, with free fatty acids and peroxide value retested on aged stock.

Lots and expiry dates

Record grade, origin and processing method for each lot, and keep authenticity test results on file for lots sold as pure or extra virgin. Fatty acid profile varies by cultivar and season.
