Baobab oil

Baobab oil suppliers and sourcing guide

Baobab oil is pressed from the seeds of the African baobab tree, Adansonia digitata, which are left over after the fruit pulp is removed. It is a fairly balanced oil with oleic, linoleic and palmitic acids as the main fatty acids. It is sold mainly to the cosmetics trade as cold-pressed or refined oil, often from wild-harvested fruit in southern and western Africa.

Forms and grades of baobab oil

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Cold-pressed oil

Pressed and filtered oil, golden in color, the most common grade.

  • Refined oil

Refined, deodorized oil with lighter color and odor for cosmetic formulas.

  • Organic and fair-trade sourced

Oil from certified organic, often wild-harvested fruit, sometimes with community-sourcing certifications.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Fatty acid profile
Fatty acid composition by GC of the methyl esters (AOCS Ce 1-62 or an equivalent ISO method), reported as percent of total fatty acids; oleic, linoleic and palmitic acids are the main fractions.
Peroxide and anisidine values
Peroxide value (AOCS Cd 8b-90) for primary oxidation and p-anisidine value for secondary oxidation, often combined as TOTOX; these show how fresh the oil is at release.
Free fatty acids
Free fatty acids or acid value by titration (AOCS Ca 5a-40 or Cd 3d-63), which rises with poor seed handling, hydrolysis and age.
Cyclopropenoid fatty acids
Some buyers request cyclopropenoid fatty acids (sterculic and malvalic acids), which occur in baobab seed and are reduced by refining.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, reported against the supplier's specification or the limits of the target market.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store sealed, cool and away from light. The oil can thicken or cloud when cold. Shelf life is set by the supplier specification, with peroxide value retested on aged stock.

Lots and expiry dates

Wild-harvested supply varies with region and season, so record origin, color and the fatty acid profile for each lot. Rotate first-expiry, first-out.
