Blueberry extract

Blueberry extract suppliers and sourcing guide

Blueberry extract is made from the fruit of cultivated highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) or wild lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium). Fruit, juice concentrate or pomace is extracted with water or water-ethanol, often purified on resin to concentrate anthocyanins and other polyphenols, then spray dried. Brands buy it as powders standardized to anthocyanins or polyphenols; bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is a separate ingredient.

Forms and grades of blueberry extract

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Anthocyanin-standardized extract

Resin-purified powder sold with a minimum anthocyanin percentage by a named HPLC or pH-differential method.

  • Polyphenol-standardized extract

Powder sold on total polyphenols by Folin-Ciocalteu, usually with a lower anthocyanin content than resin-purified grades.

  • Juice powder

Spray-dried juice or juice concentrate on a carrier, used for flavor and color more than for marker content.

  • Wild (lowbush) blueberry extract

Extract from Vaccinium angustifolium harvested in Maine and eastern Canada, sold separately from highbush extracts.

  • Organic

Extract from certified organic fruit, with the organic certificate tied to the lot.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Identity and adulteration (HPLC)
Anthocyanin profile compared with blueberry references; added colorants or cheaper anthocyanin sources change the profile and are a known problem in berry extracts.
Anthocyanin assay
Total anthocyanins by HPLC or by the pH-differential method; results from the two methods are not interchangeable, so the COA should name the method.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, checked against the buyer's limits and any Prop 65 exposure targets.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli or coliforms, and Salmonella.
Pesticide residues
Multi-residue pesticide screen, required for organic claims and commonly requested for conventional material.
Physical tests
Loss on drying, mesh or particle size, bulk density and, for extracts, the extract ratio, carrier and residual solvent.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Keep extract sealed in lined drums or foil bags in a cool, dry place away from light; anthocyanins degrade with heat, light and moisture, and the powder cakes once it picks up water. Reseal opened containers promptly. Shelf life or a retest date comes from the supplier's specification, with the anthocyanin assay repeated at retest.

Lots and expiry dates

Anthocyanin content varies with species, growing region and harvest, so check each lot's assay and method against your specification. Record whether the lot is highbush or lowbush, any carrier, and rotate stock first-expiry-first-out.

Frequently asked questions

What forms of blueberry extract can brands buy?

Common forms include anthocyanin-standardized extract, polyphenol-standardized extract, juice powder, wild (lowbush) blueberry extract and organic. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.

What should the COA for blueberry extract include?

Expect identity and adulteration (HPLC), anthocyanin assay, heavy metals, microbiology, pesticide residues and physical tests, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.

How should blueberry extract be stored?

Keep extract sealed in lined drums or foil bags in a cool, dry place away from light; anthocyanins degrade with heat, light and moisture, and the powder cakes once it picks up water. Reseal opened containers promptly. Shelf life or a retest date comes from the supplier's specification, with the anthocyanin assay repeated at retest.

What is the regulatory status of blueberry extract?

Health Canada's Blueberry natural health product monograph lists Vaccinium angustifolium, V. corymbosum and V. pallidum, with the fresh or dried fruit as the source material. The same monograph excludes foods and food-like dosage forms.
