Cranberry

Cranberry suppliers and sourcing guide

Cranberry is the fruit of Vaccinium macrocarpon, grown mainly in the US, Canada and Chile. Supplement and food brands buy spray-dried juice powder, whole-fruit powder, and extracts standardized to proanthocyanidins (PACs); food makers also buy juice concentrate, sweetened dried fruit and cold-pressed seed oil. PAC results depend heavily on the assay method, so the method is part of the specification.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

PAC assay (BL-DMAC)
Proanthocyanidins by the BL-DMAC method. Other methods give much higher numbers, so compare lots only on the same method.
Identity and adulteration
HPLC anthocyanin and PAC profile; cranberry has A-type PACs, which helps detect blending with grape seed or peanut skin extracts.
Moisture and water activity
Loss on drying or water activity; juice powders are hygroscopic.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella.
Heavy metals and pesticides
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS and a multi-residue pesticide screen.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Keep powders sealed with desiccant, cool and dry; juice powder takes up moisture and cakes quickly. Store concentrate refrigerated or frozen per supplier spec. Shelf life or retest date comes from the supplier.

Lots and expiry dates

PAC content varies with crop year and process, and carrier level changes per-gram results. Record the PAC method, carrier and supplier lot for each receipt.
