Ellagic acid

Ellagic acid suppliers and sourcing guide

Ellagic acid is a polyphenol, the dilactone of hexahydroxydiphenic acid, that occurs in plants mostly bound as ellagitannins. Commercial ellagic acid is usually made from pomegranate peel or husk, and sometimes from Terminalia fruit, gallnuts or raspberry seed, by extracting the ellagitannins and hydrolyzing them with acid or enzymes so free ellagic acid crystallizes out. Brands buy it as a pale yellow to tan powder standardized to a stated ellagic acid content.

Forms and grades of ellagic acid

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Standardized pomegranate extract

Pomegranate peel or husk extract standardized to a stated ellagic acid content, often around 40%, with other pomegranate polyphenols present.

  • High-purity ellagic acid

Grades of 90% or more made by hydrolysis and recrystallization, used where ellagic acid is the labeled ingredient.

  • Other botanical sources

Ellagic acid from Terminalia chebula, gallnuts or raspberry seed, sold by some suppliers as an alternative to pomegranate.

  • Organic and solvent-free grades

Extracts made with water or ethanol only, or from certified organic fruit, for brands with clean-label requirements.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Ellagic acid assay
Ellagic acid content by HPLC-UV against a reference standard; the method matters, because some suppliers report total ellagic acid after hydrolysis rather than free ellagic acid.
Identity
HPLC fingerprint or HPTLC against the stated botanical source, so the extract can be traced to pomegranate or another plant.
Loss on drying and ash
Moisture and residue on ignition; high ash can indicate carry-over from acid hydrolysis.
Residual solvents
Ethanol, methanol or other process solvents by headspace GC.
Heavy metals and pesticides
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, and pesticide residues by LC-MS/MS and GC-MS for fruit-derived material.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, and absence of Salmonella and E. coli.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store ellagic acid powder sealed in a cool, dry place away from light. It dissolves poorly in water and is fairly stable as a dry solid, but extracts with other polyphenols can darken with heat and humidity. Shelf life follows the supplier's specification, with retest of assay for older stock.

Lots and expiry dates

Record the ellagic acid result and the method used for each lot, since free versus total ellagic acid values are not comparable. Note the plant source and part on the receiving record.

Frequently asked questions

What forms of ellagic acid can brands buy?

Common forms include standardized pomegranate extract, high-purity ellagic acid, other botanical sources and organic and solvent-free grades. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.

What should the COA for ellagic acid include?

Expect ellagic acid assay, identity, loss on drying and ash, residual solvents, heavy metals and pesticides and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.

How should ellagic acid be stored?

Store ellagic acid powder sealed in a cool, dry place away from light. It dissolves poorly in water and is fairly stable as a dry solid, but extracts with other polyphenols can darken with heat and humidity. Shelf life follows the supplier's specification, with retest of assay for older stock.

What is the regulatory status of ellagic acid?

Health Canada's Natural Health Products Ingredients Database lists ellagic acid (CAS 476-66-4) as an isolate under Schedule 1, item 2 of the Natural Health Products Regulations. The same entry lists source materials including pomegranate (Punica granatum) fruit peel, raspberry (Rubus idaeus) fruit and Terminalia chebula fruit.
