Fisetin
Fisetin suppliers and sourcing guide
Fisetin is a flavonol (3,3',4',7-tetrahydroxyflavone), a yellow pigment found in strawberries, apples and onions and at much higher levels in the wood of trees such as the Japanese wax tree (Rhus succedanea) and smoke tree (Cotinus coggygria). Commercial fisetin is extracted from these woods with solvents and purified, usually to 98%, or made by synthesis. Brands buy a yellow powder for capsules, often in modest volumes.

Forms and grades of fisetin
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Fisetin 98%
Purified fisetin powder, the standard grade for capsules.
Lower-standardized extracts
Plant extracts standardized to a lower fisetin percentage, such as 50%, with other plant compounds present.
Dispersible and lipid-based forms
Fisetin combined with carriers such as fenugreek fiber or phospholipids to change dispersibility, at a lower fisetin content per gram.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Assay (HPLC)
- Fisetin content by HPLC against a reference standard.
- Identity
- HPLC retention time and UV spectrum, or HPTLC for plant extracts.
- Loss on drying
- Moisture content, which affects the assay basis.
- Residual solvents
- Solvents from extraction and purification against USP <467> or the buyer's limits.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, and pathogens.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Keep fisetin sealed in light-resistant containers in a cool, dry place. Shelf life and retest dates come from the supplier's specification.
Lots and expiry dates
Record the fisetin assay for each lot and the plant source if the supplier states it. Color can vary somewhat between lots and is not a reliable guide to purity.
Regulatory status
Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.
Health Canada's Natural Health Products Ingredients Database classifies fisetin as a natural health product under Schedule 1, item 2 (an isolate), with the stem of Rhus succedanea as a source material.

What forms of fisetin can brands buy?
Common forms include fisetin 98%, lower-standardized extracts and dispersible and lipid-based forms. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for fisetin include?
Expect assay (HPLC), identity, loss on drying, residual solvents, heavy metals and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should fisetin be stored?
Keep fisetin sealed in light-resistant containers in a cool, dry place. Shelf life and retest dates come from the supplier's specification.
What is the regulatory status of fisetin?
Health Canada's Natural Health Products Ingredients Database classifies fisetin as a natural health product under Schedule 1, item 2 (an isolate), with the stem of Rhus succedanea as a source material. A Health Canada natural health product monograph also lists synthetic fisetin as a medicinal ingredient.
