Grape seed extract
Grape seed extract suppliers and sourcing guide
Grape seed extract is made from the seeds of wine and juice grapes (Vitis vinifera), recovered from pomace in France, Italy, the US and China. The seeds are extracted with water or water-ethanol, purified and spray-dried to a reddish-brown powder rich in proanthocyanidins (oligomeric procyanidins, often called OPC). Products are sold on percent proanthocyanidins or polyphenols, and the assay method drives the number.

Forms and grades of grape seed extract
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
High-OPC extract
Purified extract sold at roughly 90 to 95% proanthocyanidins by UV, used in capsules and tablets.
Polyphenol-standardized extract
Extract sold on total polyphenols by Folin-Ciocalteu, sometimes with a monomer and oligomer breakdown by HPLC.
Water-extracted extract
Extract made with water only, preferred by some buyers for food and beverage use.
Grape seed flour
Defatted, milled seeds left after oil pressing, sold as a food ingredient.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Proanthocyanidins assay
- Proanthocyanidins by UV (acid-butanol or similar) or by HPLC; results differ a lot by method, so the method must be named.
- Identity and adulteration (HPLC)
- Monomer, dimer and oligomer profile; grape seed has mainly B-type procyanidins, which helps detect peanut skin or pine bark blending.
- Residual solvents
- Ethanol or other process solvents against USP <467>.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella.
- Loss on drying
- Moisture of the spray-dried powder.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Keep the extract sealed in lined drums, cool, dry and away from light; it is hygroscopic and darkens with moisture and heat. Reseal opened containers. Shelf life or retest date comes from the supplier.
Lots and expiry dates
Proanthocyanidin numbers vary by method and by grape variety and seed source. Record the assay method, solvent and supplier lot for every lot.
Regulatory status
Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.
