Hemp extract (CBD)
Hemp extract (CBD) suppliers and sourcing guide
Hemp extract is an extract of the flowers and leaves of hemp, low-THC varieties of Cannabis sativa L., that contains cannabidiol (CBD) and other cannabinoids. It is made by extraction with supercritical CO2 or ethanol, followed by winterizing, decarboxylation and often distillation. It is sold as full-spectrum extract, broad-spectrum extract with THC removed, CBD isolate, and water-dispersible forms; its legal status in foods and supplements is restricted in the US and EU, so review the regulatory facts before sourcing.

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Cannabinoid potency panel
- CBD, CBDA, delta-9-THC, THCA, delta-8-THC and other cannabinoids by HPLC, with total THC calculated.
- Residual solvents
- Extraction and processing solvents such as ethanol, butane or hexane, by headspace GC, against USP <467> or the buyer's limits.
- Pesticide residues
- Multi-residue screen by GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS; hemp is often tested against strict state cannabis limits.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS; hemp takes up metals from soil.
- Microbiology and mycotoxins
- Yeast and mold, E. coli, Salmonella and aflatoxins and ochratoxin A.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Store sealed, cool and protected from light and air; cannabinoids degrade with heat, light and oxygen, and CBD can convert to other compounds over time. Oils and distillates are often stored under nitrogen. Shelf life and retest date come from the supplier, with the potency panel repeated at retest.
Lots and expiry dates
Record the full cannabinoid panel and total THC for each lot and keep the testing lab's certificate with the lot file. Potency and THC vary by lot, so recalculate batch amounts and confirm THC status every time.
