Huperzine A
Huperzine A suppliers and sourcing guide
Huperzine A is an alkaloid found in the club moss Huperzia serrata and related species. It is made by extracting the dried whole plant, then purifying to a standardized extract or to near-pure huperzine A; synthetic huperzine A is also offered. Because daily amounts are in micrograms, brands usually buy it diluted, for example as a 1% extract or a 1% trituration on a carrier, rather than as pure material.

Forms and grades of huperzine A
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Standardized Huperzia serrata extract
Plant extract standardized to a stated huperzine A percentage, commonly 1% or lower.
Purified huperzine A (98%)
Near-pure isolate, sold for further dilution by the buyer or a toll blender.
Diluted triturations
Purified huperzine A blended onto a carrier at 1% or 0.1% so microgram doses can be weighed and blended evenly.
Synthetic huperzine A
Made by chemical synthesis; source and stereochemistry should be declared on the specification.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Huperzine A assay (HPLC)
- Huperzine A content by HPLC against a reference standard; the COA should state the method.
- Identity
- HPLC retention time or HPTLC fingerprint for extracts; IR or NMR for purified material.
- Blend uniformity
- For triturations, content uniformity across samples, since the active is a small fraction of the blend.
- Residual solvents
- Ethanol or other extraction solvents against USP <467> or the buyer's limits.
- Heavy metals
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, checked against the supplier specification and the buyer's own limits.
- Microbiology
- Total plate count, yeast and mold, coliforms or E. coli, and Salmonella, against the supplier specification.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Store sealed, cool, dry and protected from light. Purified huperzine A is potent at microgram levels, so keep it in clearly labeled, controlled storage separate from bulk ingredients. Shelf life and retest date come from the supplier, with the assay repeated at retest.
Lots and expiry dates
Because doses are in micrograms, record the exact assay and dilution of each lot and recalculate batch amounts when lots change. Keep dilutions and purified material traceable to finished batches and rotate first-expiry-first-out.
Regulatory status
Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.
A Health Canada multi-ingredient natural health product monograph lists huperzine A as a medicinal ingredient, with the dried whole plant of Huperzia serrata as a source material.
Source: webprod.hc-sc.gc.ca (opens in a new tab)The same monograph gives a dose of up to 200 micrograms of huperzine A per day, and when Huperzia serrata extract and huperzine A are combined, the total huperzine A in the product cannot exceed 200 micrograms per day.
Source: webprod.hc-sc.gc.ca (opens in a new tab)The monograph limits standardized Huperzia serrata extracts to up to 20 milligrams of extract per day, at no more than 1% huperzine A potency.

What forms of huperzine A can brands buy?
Common forms include standardized Huperzia serrata extract, purified huperzine A (98%), diluted triturations and synthetic huperzine A. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for huperzine A include?
Expect huperzine A assay (HPLC), identity, blend uniformity, residual solvents, heavy metals and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should huperzine A be stored?
Store sealed, cool, dry and protected from light. Purified huperzine A is potent at microgram levels, so keep it in clearly labeled, controlled storage separate from bulk ingredients. Shelf life and retest date come from the supplier, with the assay repeated at retest.
