Mangosteen

Mangosteen suppliers and sourcing guide

Mangosteen is the fruit of Garcinia mangostana, a tropical tree grown in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. The ingredient trade sells the white edible aril as juice or puree and the thick purple pericarp (rind) as powder or as extracts standardized to xanthones such as alpha-mangostin, made by solvent extraction and drying. Because rules differ for fruit and peel, the plant part belongs on the specification.

Forms and grades of mangosteen

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Fruit juice or puree

Juice or puree from the aril, sometimes with pericarp blended in, used in drinks.

  • Pericarp powder

Dried, milled rind, sold by mesh and usually not standardized.

  • Standardized pericarp extract

Solvent extract of the rind sold with a minimum alpha-mangostin or total xanthones percentage by a named HPLC method.

  • Whole fruit powder

Freeze-dried or spray-dried fruit including rind, used in powder blends.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Identity (HPTLC)
Fingerprint against Garcinia mangostana reference material and statement of the plant part.
Xanthone assay (HPLC)
Alpha-mangostin or total xanthones by a named HPLC method for standardized extracts.
Residual solvents
For extracts made with ethanol or other solvents, results against USP <467> or the buyer's spec.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, checked against the buyer's limits and any Prop 65 exposure targets.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella (often Staphylococcus aureus too).

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store powders and extracts sealed in lined drums or bags away from heat, light and humidity. Juice and puree stay sealed and refrigerated or frozen per the supplier's instructions. Shelf life and retest dates come from the supplier, and the xanthone assay is usually repeated at retest for standardized extracts.

Lots and expiry dates

Xanthone content differs between rind and aril and between harvests, so check each lot's assay and plant-part statement. Record supplier lot, plant part and solvent, and keep lots traceable to finished batches.
