Meadowfoam seed oil

Meadowfoam seed oil suppliers and sourcing guide

Meadowfoam seed oil is pressed or extracted from the seeds of Limnanthes alba, a plant native to the US Pacific Northwest and grown commercially in Oregon. More than 95% of its fatty acids are long-chain (C20 and C22) fatty acids that are unusual among seed oils, which makes it very resistant to oxidation. It is used almost entirely in cosmetics and is usually bought as a refined oil.

Forms and grades of meadowfoam seed oil

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Refined oil

Refined, bleached and deodorized oil, the standard cosmetic grade with low color and odor.

  • Organic or virgin oil

Less-processed oil from a small number of suppliers.

  • Derivatives

Meadowfoam estolides, esters and other derivatives sold as separate cosmetic ingredients.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Fatty acid profile
Fatty acid composition by GC of the methyl esters (AOCS Ce 1-62 or an equivalent ISO method), reported as percent of total fatty acids; C20:1 and C22 fatty acids make up most of the oil.
Peroxide value
Peroxide value at release, usually low because the oil is very stable.
Free fatty acids
Free fatty acids or acid value by titration (AOCS Ca 5a-40 or Cd 3d-63), which rises with poor seed handling, hydrolysis and age.
Iodine and saponification values
Iodine and saponification values, plus color and odor, to confirm identity against the supplier's specification.
Microbiology
Total aerobic count and yeast and mold where the supplier tests for cosmetic use, though anhydrous oils rarely allow microbial growth.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store sealed at room temperature away from direct heat and light. The oil is unusually stable to oxidation, so it keeps longer than most seed oils, but containers should still be closed between uses. Shelf life is set by the supplier specification.

Lots and expiry dates

Supply comes from a small growing area, so note crop year and supplier lot for each delivery. Record color, odor and peroxide value and rotate first-expiry, first-out.

Regulatory status

Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.

This is general information, not regulatory advice. Status differs by country and by how the ingredient is used, so check the rules for your product and market.
