Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylserine suppliers and sourcing guide

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid with serine on its phosphate head group. Commercial PS is made by treating soy or sunflower lecithin with the enzyme phospholipase D in the presence of L-serine, which swaps the choline head group of phosphatidylcholine for serine; the product is then purified and dried. It is sold as powder or as a liquid in oil at a declared PS percentage, commonly 20% to 70%.

Forms and grades of phosphatidylserine

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Soy-derived PS

Made from soy lecithin; the most common grade, needs a soy allergen statement and often a non-GMO declaration.

  • Sunflower-derived PS

Made from sunflower lecithin for soy-free products.

  • Powder grades

PS on a carrier such as silica or another excipient, sold by percentage (for example 20%, 50% or 70%) for capsules and tablets.

  • Liquid or oil-dispersed PS

PS in an oil base for softgels.

  • Fish or krill-derived PS

PS with marine fatty acids, made from fish or krill phospholipids; a smaller, specialty market.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

PS assay (HPLC or 31P-NMR)
Phosphatidylserine content by HPLC with a light-scattering or similar detector, or by 31P-NMR, with other phospholipids (PC, PE, PA) reported.
Source and GMO status
Declaration of soy or sunflower origin, with non-GMO or identity-preserved documentation where claimed.
Peroxide value
Measure of lipid oxidation, which rises with age, heat and air exposure.
Moisture and residual solvents
Loss on drying or Karl Fischer, plus residual solvents such as hexane or acetone used in phospholipid processing.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, checked against the supplier specification and the buyer's own limits.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, coliforms or E. coli, and Salmonella, against the supplier specification.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store sealed under nitrogen or with minimal headspace, cool and away from light, since phospholipids oxidize and powders absorb moisture. Many suppliers specify refrigerated or below 25 °C storage. Shelf life and retest are set by the supplier, with PS assay and peroxide value repeated at retest.

Lots and expiry dates

PS content and the share of other phospholipids vary by lot, so dose from the actual COA assay and record it with the lot. Track the source (soy, sunflower or marine) for allergen labeling and rotate first-expiry-first-out because oxidation increases with time.

Frequently asked questions

What forms of phosphatidylserine can brands buy?

Common forms include soy-derived PS, sunflower-derived PS, powder grades, liquid or oil-dispersed PS and fish or krill-derived PS. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.

What should the COA for phosphatidylserine include?

Expect pS assay (HPLC or 31P-NMR), source and GMO status, peroxide value, moisture and residual solvents, heavy metals and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.

How should phosphatidylserine be stored?

Store sealed under nitrogen or with minimal headspace, cool and away from light, since phospholipids oxidize and powders absorb moisture. Many suppliers specify refrigerated or below 25 °C storage. Shelf life and retest are set by the supplier, with PS assay and peroxide value repeated at retest.
