Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass suppliers and sourcing guide

Wheatgrass is the young leaf of common wheat, Triticum aestivum, cut before the plant forms its stem joints and grain. It is grown outdoors over winter in the US Midwest or indoors on trays, then either dried and milled whole into leaf powder or juiced and the juice spray-dried or freeze-dried. Brands buy the powders for greens blends, capsules and drink mixes.

Forms and grades of wheatgrass

Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.

  • Whole leaf powder

Dried, milled young leaves, keeping the fiber.

  • Juice powder

Pressed juice dried by spray or freeze drying, with less fiber and more concentrated color.

  • Organic

Field- or tray-grown wheatgrass under organic certification, with the certificate tied to the lot.

  • Gluten-tested grade

Powder tested for gluten by ELISA for brands planning a gluten-free label claim.

What to check on the COA

Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.

Gluten (ELISA)
Gluten by R5 ELISA to show no grain or seed carryover, against 20 ppm if a gluten-free claim is made.
Chlorophyll or color
Chlorophyll content or a color reading as a freshness and identity check.
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, checked against the buyer's limits and any Prop 65 exposure targets.
Microbiology
Total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella (often Staphylococcus aureus too). Field-grown grasses can carry high plate counts.
Pesticide residues
Multi-residue screen by GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS, required for organic claims and commonly requested for conventional material.
Physical tests
Loss on drying, mesh or particle size, bulk density, color and odor against the spec.

Storage, lots and expiry

Storage and shelf life

Store powder sealed in lined, light-proof containers, cool and dry. Chlorophyll fades and the powder yellows with light, heat and oxygen, and it cakes in humidity. Shelf life comes from the supplier's spec.

Lots and expiry dates

Color, moisture and microbial counts vary with harvest timing and drying. Record supplier lot, growing method and gluten result, and rotate first-expiry-first-out.

Regulatory status

Facts from regulators and standards bodies, each linked to its source.

  • The EU Novel Food status Catalogue entry for Triticum aestivum (POL-NF-00759) records a Finnish authority conclusion that young shoots of wheat (wheatgrass) are not novel, and lists juice from young shoots as not novel in food.
