Beta-alanine
Beta-alanine suppliers and sourcing guide
Beta-alanine is an amino acid in which the amino group sits on the beta carbon rather than the alpha carbon; it is not built into proteins and has no optical isomers. Commercial beta-alanine is mostly made by chemical synthesis from acrylonitrile or acrylic acid and ammonia, then purified and crystallized, and fermentation routes also exist. Brands buy it as a white, water-soluble powder for pre-workout and sports drink mixes and capsules, and as sustained-release tablets.

Forms and grades of beta-alanine
Suppliers sell different products under the same name. Specify the one you need.
Crystalline powder
Standard beta-alanine powder for drink mixes and capsules.
Sustained-release
Beta-alanine in a coated or matrix form for tablets that dissolve slowly.
Fermented grade
Beta-alanine made by fermentation rather than chemical synthesis, offered by a few suppliers.
Branded grades
Patented or trademarked beta-alanine sold with licensing and specific label-use terms.
What to check on the COA
Compare each result with your own specification when the lot arrives.
- Identity
- Infrared spectrum matched to a reference standard, which confirms the material is beta-alanine.
- Assay
- Purity on a dried basis by nonaqueous titration or HPLC, reported against the USP, FCC or supplier specification.
- Related substances
- Related substances and synthesis by-products by HPLC, as listed in the supplier's specification.
- Loss on drying and residue on ignition
- Moisture by loss on drying and inorganic residue as residue on ignition (sulfated ash), with chloride and sulfate where the specification lists them.
- Heavy metals and microbiology
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by ICP-MS, plus total plate count, yeast and mold, E. coli and Salmonella.
Storage, lots and expiry
Storage and shelf life
Store beta-alanine in tightly closed, lined containers in a cool, dry place away from light and strong odors, and reseal opened packs promptly. Shelf life or retest date is set by the supplier's specification; assay, loss on drying and micro are the usual retest points for older stock.
Lots and expiry dates
Record assay and route of manufacture (synthetic or fermented) for each lot, plus the coating spec for sustained-release grades. Rotate stock FEFO.

What forms of beta-alanine can brands buy?
Common forms include crystalline powder, sustained-release, fermented grade and branded grades. Ask each supplier for the specification sheet of the exact grade they quote.
What should the COA for beta-alanine include?
Expect identity, assay, related substances, loss on drying and residue on ignition and heavy metals and microbiology, each with its method, specification and result for that lot.
How should beta-alanine be stored?
Store beta-alanine in tightly closed, lined containers in a cool, dry place away from light and strong odors, and reseal opened packs promptly. Shelf life or retest date is set by the supplier's specification; assay, loss on drying and micro are the usual retest points for older stock.
